Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck caused a real stir on social media on Friday when Page Six ran photos of the former '00s engaged couple hanging out again. Multiple sources told the outlet that the two now-single stars had been “spending time together in Los Angeles.” Affleck had been seen at Lopez's house “multiple times,” in fact. As a source explained, “Security picks him up at a nearby location and drops him off after spending a few hours at her house.”
So is a romantic reconciliation brewing? Not quite, although it's not impossible in the longterm. Page Six, E!, and TMZ all got insight from sources about what Affleck and Lopez's relationship is like now.
Page Six shut down hookup talk, maintaining multiple sources told the outlet that Lopez and Affleck are just friendly and have been so for years. One insider told Page Six, “They are friends…they’ve never not been.”
TMZ was also told Affleck and Lopez were “strictly friends” by its sources, but the outlet didn't rule out something romantic happening later: “There's no such thing as ‘never,‘ especially in Hollywood, so it's always possible something could be rekindled, but there's no evidence of that now,” TMZ wrote.
A source told E! the same as TMZ and Page Six's sources did: “They are just friends.”
Affleck recently made headlines for gushing about Lopez in InStyle's May 2021 cover story on her.
“I thought I had a good work ethic, but I was completely humbled and blown away by what she was committed to doing day in and day out, the seriousness in which she took her work, the quiet and dedicated way she went about accomplishing her goals, and then how she would go back and redouble her efforts,” Affleck said of his former flame and Gigli co-star. “She remains, to this day, the hardest-working person I've come across in this business. She has great talent, but she has also worked very hard for her success, and I'm so happy for her that she seems, at long last, to be getting the credit she deserves.”
He also marveled over Lopez's youthful appearance. He asked her, “Where are you keeping the fountain of youth? Why do you look the same as you did in 2003 and it kind of looks like I'm in my 40s…at best?”
Lopez responded with flattery toward Affleck: “I don't have any [beauty] secrets except JLo Beauty—and I'm giving them all to everyone with every product. Ben is funny! He still looks pretty good too.”
She added, “I also think I'm in the best shape of my life. In my 20s and 30s I used to work out but not like I do now. It's not that I work out more; I just work out harder and smarter. And it doesn't take me as long as it did in the past. I do it more for my health than I do for looks, which is funny. When you do things for the right reasons, you actually look better!”
Affleck and Lopez, for context, dated from July 2002 to January 2004. They called off their September 2003 wedding, broke up after that, then got back together before ultimately ending their relationship for good in early 2004. “I am confirming the reports that Jennifer Lopez has ended her engagement to Ben Affleck,” Lopez's publicist told People at the end of January 2004. “At this difficult time, we ask that you respect her privacy.”
