Insanely Stunning Photos of the Super Blue Blood Moon

The Super Blue Blood Moon eclipse was visible in North America on Wednesday, January 31.

Space devotees around the country were treated to an incredible trio of lunar phenomena last night, called the Super Blue Blood Moon, and the photos we saw of it were absolutely gorgeous. The last time one of these unique eclipses occurred was 150 years ago.

The Super Blue Blood Moon was the combination of three lunar events that all happened on January 31, and because of that NASA called the night a “lunar trifecta.” The first event was that the moon was full, and at its closest point to earth. Then, there was also a lunar eclipse that occurred, and was visible parts of North America, Asia, and Oceania. The last unusual part of this phenomenon was that this was the second full Moon this month.

While the moon wasn’t actually blue, the term “blue moon” is used to indicate the second full moon that occurs within one month, and “supermoon” refers to the moon when it is closest to the Earth’s orbit. The “blood” comes from its reddish hue.

According to NASA, North Americans will have to wait almost a year before they have another opportunity to see a lunar eclipse on January 21, 2019.
