Infusing Modern Charm Into a 1920's Craftsman Kitchen

This kitchen masterminded by Jessica Nelson Design is bringing together the charm of craftsman style architecture with the modern beauty of quartz and brass finishes and a showstopping cement tile installation. All together it makes for a space that feels new and fresh but still gives off major cozy vibes.

What was your design inspiration? My client loves white, marble and brass- we started there and added warmth and texture through cement tile and wood accents. The end product is a light and airy kitchen with a more functional flow. I was really inspired by the original details the home has as well, the leaded glass windows, crown moulding and custom tile transition pieces. The kitchen needed custom details to match. Was there anything on the client's wish list you prioritized? The layout was the main priority- the original design cut the space in a way that made it feel cramped and dark. The previous cabinets were dark wood and the counters were concrete. The island was placed in a way that created a lot of wasted space. We ripped out everything and started fresh. I redesigned the cabinet layout completely and flipped the island 180 degrees. The white cabinets brightened the room as did the marble-like quartz we selected. We added texture and warmth to the room with shiplap on the island, custom African Khaya shelves and lots of brass accents. What is your favorite part of the kitchen? The tile- it's amazing. People have actually thought that it's wallpaper! The pattern is Pescadero II by the Cement Tile Shop. It's timeless and emulates the leaded glass in the original windows.
