Summer is about to fade into the distance, and with it, the sweltering heat. As the winds of autumn start to blow through the window, it’s going to be a glorious time for me. I’m already picturing myself looking like the newsletter for Sleepy Jones: doing crossword puzzles in the newspaper I don’t subscribe to anymore, holding mugs of the coffee I gave up for herbal tea, and becoming the morning person I am currently not.

The first step of achieving all of this though is a bit of retail therapy. Abercrombie & Fitch has fully bounced back into the fray the last few years — finding their same audience from 7th grade again now, in our late-20s to early-30s, with looks that have aged up as well. The Johnny Collar sweater stuck out to me as something soft enough with a cotton blend to work for this, with an open collar that wouldn’t choke me in my sleep. (It’s 70% cotton and 30% Viscose, which makes it feel like it has some stretch and give to it, for someone like me who sleeps on their side with an arm under the pillow.

Is this the every day sleepwear? No. I still turn to my trusty NYU college tee from Welcome Week where the purple lettering has all but faded. But for the nights when the girlfriend sleeps over and I get up to make us tea in the morning and she asks me for a four letter word for a Christmas fire item, I can look at her in my Johnny Collar sweater and tortoise shell glasses and say, “Yule, and did I mention you look like young Meg Ryan today…” (Let me have this.)

It’s worth noting that two aspects of this sweater — for me — make it more of a sleep sweater than an outdoor sweater, apart from the soft fabric. Number one: the loose stitching on this is nice because it keeps it breathable and loose — even easier without wool in the blend—but you can kind of see through it a tiny bit, which means you’d need to wear an undershirt or oxford under it outside. That then creates the issue with doing so — number two — the open collar looks great without an undershirt for house-lounging, but is a bit too open for out in the wild, and an oxford shirt under it looks like too many collars in my opinion. This is definitely not how other people will look at this. (And particularly where the collar sits for people with different body shapes and sizes.)

All that said, I couldn’t be happier with how chic I now look in the morning. It’s like an 80s romantic comedy. I thankfully couldn’t be more ready for fall now.
