I don’t think it’s radical to say that COVID-19 has fundamentally changed how we live and work. Almost everyone I know is on a hybrid work schedule, with days in the office and days at home, myself included. This means two things. First, my low-grade millennial office anxiety has never been more manageable. Second, I need a desk. And a chair.
But what kind of desk to get? I live in a studio apartment in the New York metro area, and can’t fit anything massive in my space. I’m also a digital native and keep everything on my hard drive, so I don’t need a filing system or tons of drawers. Lastly, I don’t want to sit on a cheap chair from T.J. Maxx or Home Goods, and I don’t want tons of wires everywhere. (It’s a personal pet peeve.)
As luck would have it, that was exactly when FlexiSpot swooped in and asked if I’d like to test one of the brand’s standing desks and accompanying ergonomic chairs. Personally, standing desks are one of my favorite features of any NYC media office, but I hadn’t even thought about one for myself. “Say less,” I said. When they arrived, the first thing I noticed was the following: These things are heavy. Nothing I, as a feminist, couldn’t handle, but the desk pieces were a challenge to get into my apartment by myself. After all, a standing desk is a piece of machinery, with leg risers and electronic components inside its body. (I think of it as less like buying a desk and more like buying an appliance.)
From there, the setup is not as easy as, say, an IKEA desk or chair would be. The desk comes with feet, risers, and the actual desk itself, and about a million screws. Luckily, FlexiSpot also sent what is essentially a mini tool kit to help me build my desk, and a detailed set of instructions. I was daunted but undeterred. Once all the pieces were in place, it was smooth sailing. From unboxing to complete setup, the process took about 40 minutes. Then the real fun began. FlexiSpot’s desks plug in, obviously, and come with a built-in cord box on the bottom that’s adjustable (for as much or as little cord as you need). As a bonus, the Premium Standing desk’s controller comes with a USB port for charging phones, headphones, or whatever else.
The C7 chair is big enough that I can sit cross-legged in it while I work. Its base, legs, and wheels all click together, and after a few minutes getting the base aligned to the chair itself, it screws into place. I’m always a little skeptical when brands claim that their chairs provide back support, but FlexiSpot was not kidding. This chair is comfy. It has an adjustable lower back to match how you sit in the chair, a deep cushion seat, and while its certainly a large piece of furniture, the pro of being able to sit in a chair for an entire WFH day outweigh the con of losing a little floor space.
Once plugged in, the FlexiSpot setup worked like a dream. I sit, I stand, I stretch. I do it all. I don’t feel like I’m tripping over cords. I’ve got enough space for everything I need. My home office actually feels like an office. It has become the perfect work-from-home solution I didn’t know I needed, and I’m excited to figure out how the fuck I’m getting it out of this apartment when I move.
