Influencer is begging couples to stop giving wedding guests favors with their names on them

“Why would [wedding guests] want a knick knack with your name on it?”

That’s the question one influencer, Sean Taylor (@heyseantaylor), posed to TikTokers on Sept. 12 in a video that’s since gained over 3.4 million views and 669,000 likes.

Rather than the “tchotchke bobble-dee doo-dads” that most couples opt for — think shot glasses or key chains engraved with the couple’s initials and wedding date — Taylor asserts that the only thing guests want to walk away with is a photo of them looking “hot [and] all dressed up.”

And according to TikTokers’ comments, a lot of people are in total agreement.

Taylor’s video — captioned, “Stop 👏 giving👏 people👏 things👏 w your name on it” — reveals to viewers how she made her guests feel special on her own big day, while sending them home with a souvenir they’re sure to treasure forever.

And Taylor’s not alone in this push for guest-forward favors. While Taylor and her husband opted for a dedicated photographer to capture all of their guests’ wedding day looks, other couples are hiring portrait artists to paint their guests’ likenesses.

One such artist, Siena Starns (@sketchedbysiena), is a U.K.-based painter who creates hand-painted, personalized keepsakes for guests, right there at the reception.

However, for couples still going the old fashioned route with favors, one TikToker, Hannah (@reallynothannah), asserts that they might inevitably wind up in a Goodwill — and when they do, she’ll be there to happily purchase them.

“If you make some weird, custom knick knack for your wedding favor, don’t feel bad about it, because I’ll buy it from Goodwill when your guest donates it, and I’ll have it on display in my living room,” Hannah states in her stitched response to Taylor’s video.

While some TikTokers have expressed that they enjoy the old-fashioned favors — “I disagree about the favors. I love having a little collection of things from peoples’ weddings,” commented @tiffibean13 — others lauded the idea of guest-centric ones.

“This is literally like so genius,” wrote @snicketybuckets.

“Yes!! I printed photos of my guests and put them in their thank yous instead of photos of myself and my husband 🤣 seemed so obvious!” commented @alexandrakimberley88.

Others, however, expressed some concerns over the cost of such favors. “Okay but wasn’t this expensive?” asked @salvadorspumpkinpancakes.

For couples who might not have the funds to hire a portrait artist or photographer but still want to provide their guests with meaningful favors, Wedding Sparrow suggests the following gifts that actually give back (rather than winding up in a landfill or thrift shop):

  1. Donate to a charity in lieu of favors

  2. Send a virtual charity gift

  3. Purchase handmade favors that benefit communities in need

  4. Give ethically sourced edible favors, like fair trade chocolate

  5. Provide eco-friendly favors, like pollinator seed packets
