Indy teens, high schoolers can work out for free this summer at Planet Fitness. Here's how

Parents worried their teen might be spending the next three months watching YouTube on the couch have a way of keeping them active — and it won't cost a dime out of the family vacation fund.

Planet Fitness is letting teenagers once again work out in any of the company's more than 2,400 gyms for free.

"The High School Summer Pass program offers a solution for teens to stay active during the summer when school is out and important academic and extracurricular programs such as sports, gym class and after-school activities are in recess," Senior Director of Public Relations at Planet Fitness, Becky Zirlen, recently told USA TODAY.

Here's what parents should know about the program, now in its fourth year.

Does the high school summer pass for Planet Fitness work for all locations?

Yes; the program is available at every Planet Fitness across Canada and the United States with the exception of Puerto Rico, according to the company.

When does it start?

Planet Fitness' summer pass program begins Saturday, June 1, 2024, and lasts until Aug. 31, 2024, the fitness club said.

Who can participate?

Teenagers between the ages of 14-19 can pre-register online at the High School Summer Pass '24 link. For teens under the age of 18, a parent must sign a waiver for them to participate. Parents can sign their teen up for the program online or in person at any Planet Fitness location. After the waiver is signed, teens are able to work out independently.

Can parents work out with their teens at Planet Fitness?

Yes, provided they have a Planet Fitness membership, the company said. The free program is available only to teens.

Do I need to get the Planet Fitness App?

Yes, Planet Fitness recommends downloading their app to participate in the program. Parents or teens will have to create an account with the same email used to sign up for the High School Summer Pass. On June 1, the pass will automatically link to the account.

Will fitness classes be offered at Planet Fitness?

All participants will have access to the free fitness classes offered through the Planet Fitness PE@PF program.
