What big holidays are in July?

The major federal holiday celebrated in July is Independence Day, which is held annually on July 4. Independence Day is also commonly referred to as The 4th of July, the Fourth of July, and July 4th. July 4 is on a Tuesday in 2023.

There are also a couple religious holidays in July 2023 as well. The Jewish holiday of Tisha B’av, falls on the 9th day of the Jewish month of Av—in 2023, that is the evening of July 26 in the Gregorian calendar and ends the following night. Av 9 is considered the saddest day of the Hebrew calendar, as many disastrous events occurred on that date, including the destruction of the first two Holy Temples in Jerusalem. Jews fast and pray on Tisha B’av in mourning and remembrance of various tragedies in the history of Judaism.

There's also the Islamic holiday of Ashura begins at sundown on Thursday, July 27, and lasts through the evening of Friday, July 28. A day of gratitude and thankfulness, the holiday commemorates the day Allah saved Moses and his people from Pharaoh by parting the Red Sea. Ashura means “tenth” and is celebrated on the tenth day of Muharram, which is the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar.

Is July 4 a national holiday in the United States?

Yes, July 4 has been designated as a federal holiday in the United States. That means that non-essential federal government offices are closed for the day (as are most public companies!).

There are also several other holidays on July 4. Those are National Country Music Day, Sidewalk Egg Frying Day, National Caesar Salad Day and National Barbecued Spareribs Day.

Is there a holiday on July 3, 2023?

Several holidays fall on July 3. Those are Disobedience Day, International Plastic Bag Free Day, National Stay Out of the Sun Day, National Eat Beans Day and Compliment Your Mirror Day. In many communities around the United States, Fourth of July celebrations begin early, with July 3 being the date for many fireworks displays and Independence Day celebrations.

Does July have a full moon?

Yep! The next full moon is the “Super Buck Moon” on July 5, 2023. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the full moon that we see in July is called the Buck Moon because the antlers of male deer (aka bucks) reach their peak growth this time of the year. Bucks shed and regrow their antlers each year, regrowing a larger set with each passing year.

In 2023, the July Buck Moon also happens to be one of biggest full moons of the year, called a supermoon. This has to do with the egg-shaped orbit that the moon makes around Earth, and how one moon per year is closest to Earth than any other. In 2023, that will happen in the month of July—making this month’s Buck Moon a supermoon—as well as both full moons in August and September.

The July full moon is also known as the Thunder Moon because thunderstorms are so prevalent during the month of July.
