The Incredible Hulk almost got a sequel, and if its director got his way, it would’ve introduced a whole bunch of different Hulks.

That’s what Louis Leterrier told ComicBook during a recent interview, saying: “Yeah there was like a whole sequel. There was like Grey Hulk, Red Hulks – there was a lot of good stuff that we were planning."

Instead of a follow-up to the 2008 film, Marvel chose to recast the role, switching Ed Norton for Mark Ruffalo and going for a different take on the Bruce Banner character entirely.

While the original Avengers have all received stellar standalone films in the interim (Iron Man has three, Captain America three, and Thor four), Hulk’s been side-lined as a somewhat peripheral character, suggesting Marvel didn’t really know what to do with him.

Letterier, however, had a plan. "Hulk is a complex character within the Marvel Universe. You want the primeval Hulk... the rage Hulk. And then when you go Grey Hulk and Smart Hulk you lose that a little bit and you get a little bit more kiddish with it."

One thing’s for sure: the Hulk we ended up with in 2022’s She-Hulk isn’t the one Leterrier would’ve gone with. “I like She-Hulk, but then you know, yoga between Hulk and... I was like 'OK! Yeah, we're very far from my Hulk.'"

You can next see a fresh variant of the Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World, which is rumored to introduce Harrison Ford as Red Hulk. That film is scheduled for July 26, 2024.
