Imaginary Wish List: Andy Warhol

A pioneer of the pop art movement and an eternal style icon, Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh to Slovakian parents. He rose to fame in the 1950s for his commercial illustrations (think Campbell’s soup cans) and it wasn’t until the 60s that he started exhibiting his works in galleries. Today, Warhol’s influence is ubiquitous, but during his lifetime, it was concentrated in his famous Factory, where artists, drag queens, intellectuals and Hollywood royalty gathered. Tapping into the zeitgeist of the 1960s, he produced artworks that encapsulated the rise of celebrity culture, and worked across many mediums: screenprints, films (the famous Chelsea Girls), painting and photography. A devout, practising Catholic, Warhol lived openly as a gay man at a time when it was not readily accepted by society. Whether he was meeting Jimmy Carter, spending time at the Factory with Jean-Michel Basquiat or photographing Elizabeth Taylor, Warhol’s charisma shone through. In honour of his body of work and style, here’s what we imagine Warhol might wear today.
