I'm a shopping editor: there's already some (very) early Labor Day deals

Dyson Vacuum in a home with a green laser vacuuming around a chair on a hard surface

As Homes & Gardens' Head of eCommerce, I spend my life finding, sourcing, and testing the best products in the world. I also spend a pretty big chunk of my time editing articles and monitoring prices as we cover live sales events.

But while I was planning out our coverage for Labor Day next weekend I noticed that a lot of the products we might cover were already on sale.

Labor Day is not traditionally the biggest sales event, so any deal you can grab on the best vacuums and mattresses is well worth considering. You won't see lower prices until the madness of Black Friday.

I'll be upfront: not all of these are the best deals you'll ever see. Some of these products have been at lower prices during other sales periods this year. But if you know what you need, you might find yourself saving hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Kitchen & Cooking

Kitchen deals are pretty rare on Labor Day - you tend to see the best deals around Black Friday. However, I've spotted some pretty decent deals already. If you need an air fryer ASAP, it might be worth considering some of these.

Instant Vortex Plus 6-in 1| was $129.99, now $99.95 at Amazon
The Instant Vortex Plus 6-in 1 is one of our all-time favorite air fryers, and it's currently $99.95 in the runup to the Labor Day sales, which is an incredible price.View Deal

Instant Vortex Plus Dual Air Fryer | Was $169.95, now $139.95 at Amazon
The Instant Vortex Plus Dual is our pick for the best air fryer for large portions. Two 4qt. baskets combine for a whopping 8qt capacity, so you can cook for the whole family. I love the innovative SyncFinish function, which can cook two different meals at different temperatures and times but make sure they're both finished at exactly the same time. View Deal

Keurig K-Express | Was $79.99, now $59.99 at Amazon
Full disclosure: we haven't tested this one, though we have a lot of Keurig reviews in the pipeline. It's already a pretty cheap coffee maker, and now it's $20 off. It's a good choice for college students. It won't brew you a gourmet Italian espresso, but it'll make a half-decent coffee that will wake you up for less. View Deal

Philips Essential Airfryer XL | Was $199.95, now $179.95 at Amazon
Our tests found that a unique 'starfish' design of the Phillips Essential ensures even cooking. With a sleek digital touch screen and 7 presents to choose from, this multipurpose appliance is now discounted at Amazon.View Deal

Cuisinart Precision Stand Mixer | Was $250, now $179 at Wayfair
This mixer is a very close runner up to the KitchenAid Artisan. If you've ever wanted a KitchenAid but shy away from the price, this is an excellent alternative at a much lower price.View Deal

Samsung 3 Door Smart Refrigerator | Was $2,599, now $1,999 at Lowe's
This is our favorite refrigerator. To be totally transparent, we can't test fridges, but after many hours of research and thousands of products later we think this is the best balance of price and performance out there.View Deal

Cleaning

The landmark deals for vacuum cleaners and other cleaning tech tend to come in around Black Friday, but there's some good deals, including the return of one of my favorites.

Best vacuum deal

Hoover ONEPWR Pet Max | was $309.99, now $177.99 at Amazon
This was my favorite deal during Prime Day and it's back again. It's a huge saving on an already cheap vacuum. I have one of these in my place and it does a pretty great job. Don't get me wrong, there are much better vacuums out there, but not at this price. If you need a decent vacuum ASAP, I'd get this now. View Deal

Dyson Outsize + | was $949.99, now $688.99 at Amazon
This is the best vacuum for pet hair bar none. It's lightweight, agile, and incredible effective on dirt and dander. Our biggest complaint with Dyson is the price, so any discount is worth buying.View Deal

iRobot Roomba j7+ |was $799, now $529.99 at Amazon
This is our favorite robot vacuum. It does a great job on pet hair, identifies pet messes and avoids them, and laast for 60 days before it needs to be emptied. View Deal

iRobot Roomba s9+ | was $999.99, now $649.99 at Amazon
iRobot's top-of-the-line s9 model is probably the best robot vacuum you buy for cleaning carpets. We found that It works deep into carpet fibres to remove dirt and dander. However, a word of warning - it's so powerful that it can knock down furniture.View Deal

Samsung Smart Top Load Washer | Was $989.99, now $679.99 at Best Buy

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool™ | Was $749.99, now $599.99 at Amazon
We recently reviewed the formaldehyde version of this fan, and this model is identical apart from the anti-formaldehyde tech. It's an incredibly effective combination fan and air purifier. It will easily cool a whole room while cleaning your air while giving you real-time reports into your air quality.  View Deal

Mattresses and Sleep

Now we're into more tradtional Labor Day fare. Mattress sales tend to coincide with all the big federal holidays, and Labor Day is one of the biggest as mattress retailers try to shift old stock  to make room for the Black Friday rush.

Best mattress deal

Our best box mattress is the Emma. It's one of the best quality memory foam mattresses that comes conveniently delivered in a box to your door. It has an amazing 50% off at the moment, though this deal has been on for a while, and we don't expect it to go anywhere. View Deal

Siena was already one of the is a new-t it's one of the cheapest memory foam mattresses we've ever seen, and it's now $300 cheaper. It's certainly not the best bed in the world, but there isn't a better bed for under $500. View Deal

Tempur-Adapt Topper | was $419, now $251.40 at Tempur-Pedic
Our biggest problem with Tempur has always been the price. The Tempur-Adapt went straight in at #1 when we put it to the test, but it's usually too expensive for me to justify recommending it. This 40% off saving makes it a great deal if you want a softer bed but can't afford a new mattress. View Deal

Labor Day FAQs

When is Labor Day?

This year, Labor Day falls on September 4th. It's a federal holiday celebrating  workers, so most people will have the day off.

What's on sale on Labor Day

Pretty much anything you can think of will be on sale, but the biggest discounts will be on mattresses and outdoor furniture.

These are all pretty good deals, but don't feel you have to rush. I have a hunch that a lot of these will hang around until Labour Day itself, and if you miss that, I think they'll be a lot cheaper when Black Friday rolls around in a couple months. That said, if you need any of these products right now, I wouldn't struggle through the best part of three months without them, especially bedding.
