As a former sweater designer, I’m extremely picky about the type of sweaters that I buy. I’ve been curating my collection of warm, cozy, buttery-soft pullover sweaters for years, and there are a few things I refuse to compromise on when I do my yearly shopping. One, I prefer them to be tightly knit and substantial, so they actually keep me warm. Two, they need to be made from fibers that are breathable and won't irritate the skin. And three, I want a timeless silhouette, so that when next winter rolls around, I won’t feel the need to toss it. This may seem like a steep list, but my motto is buy nice or buy twice, so my trick to checking the first two boxes is by shopping for cashmere sweaters.
Cashmere sweaters are super soft and only get better with every wash. I know the price tag can be intimidating, so I sifted through my favorite retailers to find high-quality options on sale for under $200 from Banana Republic, Nordstrom, and Saks Fifth Avenue. They all come in classic silhouettes you’ll never get tired of — hence, ticking all my boxes for the perfect winter sweater.

Banana Republic Luna Cashmere Sweater Polo
Banana Republic
If you want something outside the norm of your classic crew neck sweater, this posh Banana Republic Luna Cashmere Sweater Polo should fit the bill. It comes in six shades, including gray, taupe, white, black, and navy, and sizes XXS through XXL. It’s made from 100 percent cashmere and has a plunging V-neckline with a collar, an almost cropped length that pairs well with high-waisted bottoms, and a rib finishing at the cuff and hem.
Polo Ralph Lauren Wool-Cashmere Blend Sweater
Saks Fifth Avenue
My favorite from this list is this Polo Ralph Lauren Wool-Cashmere Blend Sweater. It has a chic, classic fit that would pair effortlessly with trousers, jeans, and loafers. I would even layer a white T-shirt underneath so it peeks out from behind the collar just a bit. The crew neck sweater is available in a navy shade in sizes XS through XL. It features a close-to-the-body fit that falls at the hip, a cable knit design, and a contrasting red pony emblem on the left side of the chest.
Nordstrom Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater
Nordstrom
Nordstrom’s Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater is a great beginner sweater if you are new to shopping cashmere because it checks all the boxes I listed above — and then some. It has a classic fold-over turtleneck silhouette, comes in seven colors, and is made from 100 percent cashmere, so you know it will be super soft. It also features tall ribbed cuffs and a natural fit that’s not too baggy or tight. Plus, it’s currently 34 percent off.
