Boob tape does exactly what you think it does: It helps your breasts stay in place when you can’t (or don’t) want to wear a bra. It's supposed to help you “defy gravity,” says Hadley King, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in NYC. But it's not all about the lift—boob tape can also be used to cover your nipples if you're wearing something see-through, sheer, or ultra-fitted, says stylist and image architect Erika Cartledge.
Many people use boob tape in place of a traditional bra for nights out, especially when wearing backless tops or deep V-cut clothing, but you can also wear it under your bathing suit because many boob tapes are actually made to be waterproof. "It's also good to look for options that come in shades close to your skin tone," says Ashley Full, a personal stylist and cofounder of Amour781.

How do I safely apply boob tape?
When it comes to applying boob tape, Dr. King says it’s important to apply it to clean skin for it to have the strongest hold. This means you won't want to use body lotion or oil before application.
You don’t want to use the boob tape directly on your nipple and areola because of how sensitive the skin is there, says Dr. King. Instead, she recommends you cover it with a cotton round, hydrogel patch, or nipple pasties before applying the tape to ensure the area doesn’t become damaged during the removal process.
You’ll also want to avoid any areas that have recently been exfoliated, dried out using alcohol, or that you’re applying a retinoid to. “It’s the same reason that we don't recommend using a retinoid before waxing your eyebrows. That is just going to increase the risk for traumatizing the skin,” Dr. King adds.
How do I safely remove boob tape?
Removing any body tape can be a challenge. And, there is one big no when taking it off: “You definitely don't want to just pull it off, because that increases the risk that you're going to tear or traumatize the skin. Generally, it's helpful to use something with an oil base,” Dr. King says. That could be a body oil, petroleum jelly, vaseline or other oil-based products.
When you have your removal product ready, King says to work that into the sides of the tape to see if that makes it easier to pull off. If you’re still facing some resistance, saturate all of the tape with the oil. You can even hop in the shower or take a bath to make the adhesive lift.
If you still have adhesive residue on your skin, King recommends using the oil-based product to remove it. If that doesn’t work, you can also use a cotton pad dipped in nail polish remover to do the trick.
There's a reason this boob tape has nearly 8,000 positive reviews. The strong-hold adhesive is sweat-proof, and in addition to using this to lift your breasts, you can even use it to protect your ankles from cuts while you're breaking in new shoes. Sounds like a win-win!
