I'm an interior designer, and these are my top home-decor picks from Target — all for $30 or less

As Yahoo's resident interior designer, I'm here with some tips on something that often throws my clients for a loop: accessorizing. Adding art and other decor provides the polish that pulls a room together. Where do I get these ever-important finishing touches, you ask? Target — yes, Target — has a plethora of gems to complete your home at some unbelievable prices, proving you can achieve high design without paying high prices.

I've curated some of my favorite items from the retailer's collections, and all are $30 or less. Still, these objéts look like they cost much more, so you can proudly put your nose in the air — and know you didn't pay through it.

Some rules of thumb for accessorizing: First, objects should be about the size of your head so they don't look like cluttered tchotchkes. Second, mix it up! Make sure your collection of art and objects isn't one-note by using a variety of materials and media — pottery, metals, paper, woven textures — to maintain interest. Finally, don't be afraid to group, layer, and change things out each season. Still overwhelmed? I'll get you started with some ideas below, but you can peruse even more great finds from Target and grab what speaks to you, knowing you're saving without skimping on style.

This piece does double duty as both sculpture and vase. I love the organic, gourd-like shape — the curves will offset sharp edges in your home, visually softening things when you group this with books and photo frames. Terra-cotta tones provide warmth and a hand-cast appearance. Add some fresh greens for height, color and freshness.

A hefty basket is a must in any home. It provides storage for everything from shoes to toys and throw blankets. Add one to the bedroom, den or living room, or go chic with this in place of a plastic laundry basket. The handwoven seagrass provides visual texture, and the handles make it as functional as it is pretty.

Every artist has done some figure drawing (me included). There's something appealing and relatable about a simple sketch of the human form. This artwork exemplifies a designer's take on fine art. The craft paper is unexpected here and will provide an interesting study for your wall. You can also layer the frame with others in varying sizes on a console or mantle.

Leave room on your shelves for these attractive bookends that will gallantly support your favorite tomes. The price can't be beat for real marble, which adds elegance to your bookcase or table. The shape is clean but statuesque, so these will work in just about any setting.

Don't forgo an objét d'art. A sculptural piece can add interest to your tabletop or bookshelves. This eye-catching accessory has a modern, organic design, and the textured ceramic provides another layer of earthy elegance. Group it with other pieces or highlight its unique shape on its own.

When you can't afford original art, a good reproduction does nicely. It adds color, interest and beauty to your walls. Hang or layer this piece, which has a frame that looks worth way more than $20 on its own. This floral painting evokes vintage vibes that are trending right now, but this kind of art is always a classic.

This piece looks as pretty as it is functional — my favorite kind. The 12-inch tray is handcrafted from woven rattan, providing the much-needed texture I'm always going on and on about. Use it to serve guests, or add it to a tabletop and layer it with a greenery-laden vase, sculptural object and stack of small leather-bound books.

Make a statement with a touch of black, which looks particularly great against neutrals. This 24-inch square pillow scales nicely on a comfy sofa or bed. The heavy weave is high quality, and it comes with the pillow insert — all for $30.

Try a unique animal texture (faux, of course) with this Shagreen box. Add the smaller size for $15 and stack them to add height and interest. Keep them on your desk to collect paper clips and pens, or put them on an entry table as a catchall for keys and other small objects to stay neat, tidy and chic.

Don't forget to add an inviting scent to your home, particularly when guests arrive. For $5, you can create another layer of atmosphere. This 5-ounce size allows you to find your favorite scent — and once you do, you can size up. Aloe and bergamot provide fresh citrus notes to brighten your day.
