‘Welcome home Ilhan’: Huge crowd greets Rep. Omar at Minnesota airport

Rep. Ilhan Omar was greeted with cheers and “Welcome home Ilhan” chants when she returned to her home state of Minnesota, in stark contrast to the “Send her back” shouts aimed at her by the crowds at President Donald Trump’s recent North Carolina rally.

Dozens of supporters greeted Omar at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport airport following a rough week in which the president targeted her and three other Democratic congresswomen of color in his “go back” tweets, leading up to “send her back” chants by his supporters at a Wednesday night campaign rally in Greenville.

Omar’s constituents rallied at the airport to show support for their representative in the wake of the attacks. KSTP reporter Tom Hauser took to Twitter to share some images and video of her arrival, the first showing a crowd waiting at the airport with supportive signs, including one that read “I Stand With Ilhan.”

A second shows a video of Omar walking in to chants of “Welcome home Ilhan,” seemingly underscoring that her home is in Minnesota.

In a third, Omar gave some impromptu remarks to the press and constituents gathered at the airport saying “We will continue...we are going to be a nightmare to this president.”

Facing blowback from Republicans on Thursday, Trump tried to distance himself from his supporters’ cries at the North Carolina rally, saying “I disagree with it. I wasn't happy with that message."

But the chant echoed a series of tweets Trump posted on Sunday, in which he said Omar and three other congresswomen of color should "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came."
