Ikea Space10 Lab Announces "Fast Food of the Future" Including Algae Hot Dogs and Mealworm Burgers

Ikea's making food that's environmentally friendly — but it may or may not be friendly to your tastebuds. Its "secret innovation" lab Space10 just announced that they and their chef-in-residence are developing the "fast food of the future," Bustle reports.

In a Medium post about the project, Space10 describes the recipes. The first, the Dogless Hotdog, is an assortment of carrots, onions, cucumber, herbs, and berry ketchup, mustard, and turmeric cream on a super nutritious micro-algae bun. Next comes the Bug Burger, made of mashed up beetroot, parsnip, potatoes, and mealworms — as in, darkling beetle larva. Then, the Neatball is a version of Ikea's famous meatball made in two variations: mealworm and vegetable.

For those who are perhaps a bit less adventurous, the LOKAL Salad is made of greens grown in a basement using nutrient-rich water instead of soil. There are three of them: "red veined sorrel, broccoli, and tarragon; pea sprouts, pink stem radish, and thyme; and borage, red frill mustard, and lemon balm." And they didn't forget dessert: Microgreen Ice Cream is made of basement-grown herbs and microgreens and comes in fennel, coriander, basil, mint , or all those flavors combined into "green goddess." Then, there's a popsicle made of woodruff, coriander, Spanish chervil and sorrel.

These dishes may not exactly sound appetizing, but according to the blog post, we can rest assured they were made under the belief that "dishes shouldn’t just be healthy or sustainable. They must be delicious, too." The post also points out that there's some sketchy ingredients in the food we're already eating. So, don't knock it until you try it.

When we can try it, though, is still unclear. We won't be eating these after furniture shopping any time soon, as they're currently confined to Space10's test kitchen.
