Ikea Celebrates 80th Anniversary with Favorites From the Archives
At Salone del Mobile in Milan on Monday, Ikea launched a limited collection of items from its archive with modern updates in honor of the home furnishings retailer’s 80th anniversary.
The Nytillverkad collection, which is set to launch in stores in July, includes a selection of products from the brand’s archive, re-imagined in new colors and materials.
“The Nytillverkad products have a simple, well-thought-out design,” said Johan Ejdemo, design manager, Ikea of Sweden. “They look good and work well.”
The line includes a spate of mid-century designs such as the Lovbacken side table, which is a fresh take on the company’s 1956 Lovet three-leg table, available in orange, blue and light green with an ash veneer top.
Swedish textile designer Sven Fristedt’s multi-color leaf pattern Krypkornell, which first appeared as Bladhult in 1980, reappears across bedding, kitchen accessories, pre-cut fabric and cushion covers. And Frisdtedt’s diagonal stripe fabric pattern, Lagermispel, comes in candy pink, sky blue and banana yellow.
Another revived Ikea design is the Domsten stool, which originally debuted in 1973 as the Jerry. Designed by Karin Mobring, the stackable pieces have a smooth pine top and metal legs in bold colors.
Other pieces in the collection include the Bondskaret hat rack, the Kulturskog plant stand and the Tuvkornell candle holders.
“This collection is loud, colorful and fun,” said Karin Gustavsson, range identity leader, Ikea of Sweden. “All of the products have a story behind them.”
