IKEA's Famous Meatballs Are Getting a Vegan Makeover for 2020

From vegan ice cream to plant-based restaurant chains taking off by storm, the vegan movement just keeps getting bigger. Now, we know it's really going mainstream with an exciting piece of news from IKEA: The Swedish furniture giant is creating a new meatball made from plant-based alternative protein.

While the company has previously released a veggie version of their famed meatballs, this is the first time they are looking to create a meatball with a plant protein product, like the much-buzzed about Beyond Burger and Impossible Burger.

“We know that the IKEA meatballs are loved by many people and for years the meatballs have been the most popular dish in our restaurants," Michael La Cour Managing Director at IKEA Food Services AB, said in a company press release. “We see a growing demand from our customers to have access to more sustainable food options and we want to meet that need. Our ambition is to make healthier and more sustainable eating easy, desirable and affordable without compromising on taste and texture.”

According to the press release, the first customer tests of the new plant-based meatball are scheduled to begin early next year. Currently, some IKEA markets are "already serving local dishes with a plant based alternative protein as an ingredient."
