Iggy Azalea Claims Twerking Made Her Lose 15 Pounds in One Week

Iggy Azalea praises twerking not for its origins in black global culture but because it apparently helped her lose 15 pounds in a week.

Iggy Azalea's new single "Mo Bounce," in which Azalea says the word "bounce" 130 times in three minutes, has flopped: it was bounced out of Australia's top 100 after just one week. This might be because it's an annoying song. Azalea seems pleased to report, however, that at least all of the twerking she did for the song's video led her to lose "15 pounds in a week."

According to E! Online, the performer took to New Zealand radio station Nova 96.9 to share that she "went on a meal plan before the video because I knew I would have to be dancing fairly skimpily dressed," and that this plan combined with her twerk-heavy dance routine led to her weight loss. Losing 15 pounds in a week, if Azalea in fact did? Doctors don't recommend it. Also — can we not with framing twerking as some weight loss trick rather than a style of dance with a long history and origins in global black culture? "Did Iggy Azalea just start the next Hollywood weight loss fad?" one story on her interview breathlessly asks; "Pop Star Claims She Lost 15 Pounds in a Week With This Weird Workout," another proclaims.

Azalea adds that twerking didn't come naturally to her, but that a teacher, whom she doesn't name, showed her the way. "My teacher was like, 'I really suggest you take yoga,' and I didn't know you had to take yoga to be a twerker but apparently you do," she told Nova 96.9. You don't, in fact, have to take yoga to be a twerker, which she might know if she had asked any of the people who've been twerking longer than she's been alive. (This just in: neither Azalea nor Miley Cyrus invented twerking.) And it would be nice — so nice — if instead Iggy used her platform to talk about the influences she draws from black culture in her dancing, accent, rapping, singing, style of dress, and more (and if the media didn't treat twerking as some exercise trend). Given her track record of appropriation, though, we're not holding our breath.
