Idris Elba Is Just Straight Up Teasing Us Over James Bond Now

We've got at least one more James Bond movie with Daniel Craig before he takes off his spy suit. Under normal circumstances, that would probably mean that we'd only now be hearing rumors about who will take on the role of 007 after Craig, but that rumor mill has been going for a while now, mostly driven by one name: Idris Elba.

The rumors started back in 2014, prompting excitement from some fans and revulsion from others at the thought of a non-white James Bond. Some critics of the possible casting have said that, far from being a race issue, Elba is too old for the role, despite the fact that he's five years younger than Craig. At the time, Elba artfully sidestepped the whole conversation, tweeting, "Isn't 007 supposed to be handsome?"

But speculation came back to life this week, fueled by a story in the British tabloid The Daily Star which said that director Antoine Fuqua had talked to Barbara Broccoli, James Bond producer and daughter of one of the people who started the film franchise, about bringing Elba aboard after Craig stepped down. Not long after that, however, a rep for Fuqua told The Hollywood Reporter that no one on their end had any idea where the story came from.

The zigzagging and the emotional roller coaster would have ended there, but Elba weighed in again on Twitter late Saturday night. And this time he didn't do anything to quash the rumors.

So we're back at square one! Right? Right.

Right?

Okay, so we have no idea what's going on. Elba seems to be having a great time though, raising and dashing fan hopes with cryptic tweets and terrible filters. At least someone's having fun.
