Ice-T says 7-year-old daughter ‘still sleeps in the bed’ with him and his wife Coco

While many celebrity parents happily share tidbits about their kids with the public via social media and the press, Ice-T and his wife, Coco Austin, are really the definition of unbothered. Because when they openly discuss their parenting styles, people cannot wait to share their opinions about how they parent their 7-year-old daughter, Chanel. And it honestly seems like they do not care.

During a guest appearance on the “That Moment with Daymond John” podcast Tuesday, Ice-T was talking about his special bond with Chanel compared to his other adult children.

“I am so much more connected to her than my other kids,” he said. He’s a proud dad to daughter Letesha, 47, and son Tracy, 31, from previous relationships.

The “Law and Order: SVU” star admitted that when he was raising his other kids, he was “distracted” by his career (he began starring on the show as a regular cast member back in 2000). Things are different for him the third time around.

“I’m comfortable [now]. I’m in a cruise pattern. I was there when Coco was pregnant, I went to the hospital and Chanel still sleeps in the bed with us.”

Honestly, it’s not a shocking thing to admit. I, too, have a 7-year-old daughter who finds her way into my bed more often than not. What makes it notable is that Ice-T is from a different generation—one that did not really allow the whole kids-sleeping-in-bed-with-mom-and-dad thing. The other thing that makes it notable is that Ice-T and Coco Austin are constantly getting criticisms for their parenting practices.

Two years ago, Coco admitted she was still breastfeeding 5-year-old Chanel.

“Chanel still likes my boob. She’s five years old,” Austin said. “A lot of people are like, ‘Oh, you’re not getting the nutrition after 2 years old. Why do it?’ And I’m like, My child’s eating steak and hamburgers. She just likes a little snack every now and then and more of the bonding between the mother. Why take that away from her?”

And last year, she faced a lot of rude comments when she shared an Instagram Story of Chanel bathing in the sink. An enormous, perfectly child-sized sink, to be fair. People called her out for putting a big kid in the sink when the sink bath is typically reserved for infants.

“Wow just Wow! Here we go again! Giving my lil girl a bath in the sink went Viral? SMH!” she wrote. “People, you gotta know by now that I’m an unconventional mother. I do what works and is easier on me. Some may want to take some pointers rather than rag on me!”

Honestly, if I had a sink that big I can’t say I wouldn’t be tempted to bathe my kids in it instead of killing my back and knees over the bathtub. Just saying!

During his podcast interview, Ice-T quoted Muhammad Ali, saying that a man having “a child in the second half of his life, after he turns 50,” is a “reset.”

He said fathering Chanel later in life is “a beautiful thing,” adding, “It made me want to live forever. It made me create new goals. It’s the best gift I could ever get.”
