I tried Meghan Markle and Oprah's favorite latte, and it wakes me up better than coffee

The vegan Clevr Blends Matcha SuperLatte is billed as a "healthier" alternative to coffee that'll give you "zen-like" focus.

There are two things you should know about me: 1) I’m not a morning person and 2) I'm pretty lazy when it comes to making things at home. Yes, I do have a bag of wilted spinach in the back of my fridge and, yes, DoorDash is my best friend. Oh, wait, one more thing: 3) I'm easily influenced. So when I saw an ad for Clevr Blends Matcha SuperLatte on Instagram in 2021, my ears perked up. And then when I found out that Meghan Markle was an early investor in the woman-owned company and that Oprah loved it too (more on that in a bit!), my whole body perked up.

Here's the thing: My stomach had gotten super sensitive to coffee over the years. But, being the aforementioned a.m. lazybones that I am, I still needed a serious jolt of caffeine in the morning to start my day. And though I love a good cup of tea, sometimes that wouldn't cut it. That's where matcha comes in. Matcha, in case you're new to it, is a finely ground powder of green tea leaves. It originated in the Far East but has rapidly become a fave beverage of many Westerners in recent decades. Turns out it's the perfect solution for me, as it lacks the gut-disturbing acids of coffee while delivering the warm, creamy and decadent taste of a morning latte. Perfect!

And when I learned that I could get a pre-mixed, top-notch matcha latte powder delivered right to my house? A dream! I wasted no time ordering 14-serving bag of Clevr's.

Billed as a "healthier" alternative to coffee, a clinical trial found that the SuperLattes were shown to have "signficant positive impact" on sleep quality, energy levels, mood and productivity.

While the Matcha SuperLatte didn't check off every single box for me, it's still a much-welcome addition to my morning routine.

Launched in 2016, Clevr Blends is known for it's 100% plant-based "super latte" mixes. Designed to leave you focused and energized, their matcha latte mix, in particular, features matcha (obviously), adaptogens, mushrooms, probiotics and a “SuperCreamer” mix of oat milk and coconut cream.

Back 2020, Duchess Meghan also got Oprah on the Clevr train after sending her a gift basket filled with the brand's mixes. Since then, Oprah has included it on her eponymous list of Favorite Things in both 2021 and 2022, specifically calling out the Golden SuperLatte, Chai SuperLatte and Sleeptime SuperLatte.

With just water and a quick frothing, this stuff turned into the matcha latte of my dreams — creamy, slightly sweet and, somehow, both calming and energizing. I've been drinking it most mornings ever since.

I'm not lying when I say that it tastes really, really good! It's incredibly rich for a powder mix, but not so much that it feels heavy. The slight sweetness from the oat and coconut milk makes it feel like a treat. I've also found that it pairs great with pretty much whatever breakfast I choose, whether it's oatmeal, eggs, a croissant or cold pizza from the night before.

I just mix three tablespoons of the Matcha SuperLatte with hot (not boiling) water in my favorite pink mug. Then I grab my handheld frother and bubble it up till its foamy as all get-out.

Making an iced matcha with the mix is slightly more difficult, but still worth it when I’m craving something colder. In whatever eight-ounce mug I can find, I mix three tablespoons with warm water until the mug's filled a bit more than halfway. Then, I froth away! Next, I grab a standard glass filled with ice and pour the matcha over the ice cubes. Warning: Pour the matcha latte directly over the ice unless you want to risk shattering the glass. (Yes, I learned the hard way.)

It's a little trickier, but using the mix to make an iced matcha latte is so, so worth it. (Clevr Blends)

What others are saying

It's not just me, Meghan and Oprah that love the this stuff. In fact, it's racked up legions of rave reviews, garnering an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. People love the taste as well as the morning mood boost and lasting energy it supplies. Like me, they also adore how easy it is to make every morning.

"I am a very picky matcha latte drinker and I was not super excited about this one when I bought it almost two months ago," shared one five-star reviewer. "I finally made my very first cup and I am overwhelmed, floating on a cloud of pure satisfaction. It is super-duper delicious! I am enjoying every sip."

"I'm up each morning before my family and make myself a mug of matcha to enjoy before tackling my to-do list, wrote a second shopper. "Effortless and quick to make! Great taste! Just enough to get me started without feeling too full before working out."

Meanwhile, another customer had some tasty recommendations: "I added a little honey, almond extract and vanilla extract to make it extra decadent. Will definitely order again!"

Is it worth it?

Even without the American-royalty stamp of approval, I would still be drinking this matcha latte. After a couple of weeks, I noticed that my mornings were a little bit easier, brighter and clear. I also didn't get that godawful caffeine crash in the early afternoon and had an overall boost of energy. Plus, the two-step process easily became a morning habit — and I'm famously terrible at creating lasting habits.

As soon as I finished the first 14-serving bag, I decided to hop on the subscription train and upgrade to the 30-serving bag. With the subscription discount, the cost breaks down to just $1.61 per beverage, which is peanuts compared to the exorbitant cost of matcha lattes in my neighborhood cafes.

It's been three years now since I first tried the Clevr Blends Matcha SuperLatte and, honestly, I don't know what I'd do without that little green bag popping up in my mailbox every month.

You can get a classic 14-serving bag for $28, or subscribe and save 15%.
