Kevin Feige confirmed last year that the upcoming Eternals will be the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to feature an openly gay lead character, revealing that Phastos, played by Brian Tyree Henry, will have a husband in the movie.

In a recent interview with New New Next, actor Haaz Sleiman, best known for his roles in Nurse Jackie and Killing Jesus, confirmed that he will be playing the role of Phastos' romantic partner.

"I just shot a Marvel film with the first openly gay superhero, The Eternals," he said. "I’m married to the gay superhero Phastos, played by Atlanta’s Brian Tyree Henry, and we represent a gay family and have a child."

Sleiman went on to add that the fact he and Henry are a couple is made explicit in the movie, and that a kiss between the two men has been filmed. "Oh yeah, absolutely, and it's a beautiful, very moving kiss," he said. "Everyone cried on set. For me it's very important to show how loving and beautiful a queer family can be."

"Brian Tyree Henry is such a tremendous actor and brought so much beauty into this part, and at one point I saw a child in his eyes, and I think it's important for the world to be reminded that we in the queer community were all children at one point," he continued. "We forget that because we’re always depicted as sexual or rebellious. We forget to connect on that human part."

In addition to playing one half of the MCU's first gay super-couple, Sleiman also recently played Rafiq, a gay Muslim, in Little America, the anthology series of immigrant stories executive-produced by his Eternals co-star Kumail Nanjiani.
