Hunting Season Makes Its NYFW Debut With Ultra-Mini Clutches and Canapés

A lot of handbag designers will point out that even their tiniest bags still have room for your cell phone. Thank goodness! But Hunting Season’s Danielle Corona, who is a finalist in this year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, had the opposite idea for her latest evening bag: The cherry-red lizard cube with black silk tassels—a scaled-down version of her popular “Trunk” crossbody—wouldn’t fit more than a credit card, a lipstick, and your apartment key. Maybe a stick of gum, too—but you’d have to leave your iPhone X at home. Consider it a luxurious new accessory and a digital detox in one.

Corona debuted the bag in her first-ever NYFW presentation on Wednesday, a low-key cocktail hour at Café Altro Paradiso. In the back, a few models lounged in sleek, minimal white and cream outfits to complement the neutral-toned bags they were carrying: There was a small lady bag in peach lizard; the brand’s best-selling cylindrical bag in cognac leather; and a new, slightly-larger version of the “Trunk” style, a rounded top-handle Corona compared to a (very stylish) lunch box.

Also new this season: mini-bags and soft envelope clutches in a fabric made from tightly-woven banana leaves. At first glance, they looked like the raffia bags from a few of Corona’s recent collections, but this artisanal technique is providing work for a whole new group of workers in Colombia. Like the raffia, it’s less expensive than leather or exotic skins, which brings up one of Hunting Season’s greatest strengths: seriously chic bags that don’t cost a fortune.
