HunterGirl tugs at heartstrings in gender-flipped look at struggles in 'Lonely Outta You.'
Last year’s American Idol runner-up HunterGirl was so impressive during the talent competition—remember Luke Bryan called her his “favorite female voice” and compared her to Miranda Lambert—that the record label didn’t just sign winner Noah Thompson, they also signed HunterGirl.
Now, just as the 2023 season of American Idol is beginning Hollywood Week, HunterGirl is releasing the single “Lonely Outta You,” which is based on her experience from her time on the show, as well as those of her fellow castmates.
The idea was hatched from discussions she had had with her fellow contestants—in particular the men. One of the aspects of American Idol that is new to all of the contestants is interviews with the press and the men especially were having a difficult time opening up about their feelings.
Once back in Nashville, HunterGirl thought about how that experience felt lonely, and she wanted to put it to song. But she also thought she wanted to gender swap it. There are a lot of songs about guys wanting to make a girl a little less lonely, but not vice versa. So, she sat down with Sarah Buxton and Jimmy Robbins to put pen to paper and the end result is “Lonely Outta You.”
“There are a lot of songs about guys telling girls, ‘Hey, you’re lonely, let me make you less lonely,’ and when I was thinking about that, there aren’t really songs from a girl’s perspective on this that makes the same connection,” says HunterGirl. “Everybody gets lonely sometimes. I wanted to give another perspective and tell the other side of the story.”
HunterGirl, whose previous single “Red Bird” skyrocketed to No. 1 iTunes All Genre and Country, will be performing her new single when she hits the road on select dates with Luke Bryan, Parmalee, Josh Turner and Luke Combs for his pre-show tailgate stage.
