Hunter x Hunter Fighting Game Announced By Marvel vs Capcom Developer

The year is 2023. Hunter x Hunter hasn’t seen a new episode of anime for almost a decade, and the manga is released sporadically at best. The franchise has ebbed and flowed over the years, but its popularity has largely died down. And now, it’s getting its first video game in over a decade.

Eighting announced late last week that it was working on a “full-scale fighting game” based on Hunter x Hunter (thanks Gematsu). For those who don’t know Eighting, it’s got a very solid reputation for fighting games, having developed the very well received Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and the similarly lauded DNF Duel.

It also worked as a support studio on a number of titles, like Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, Pikmin 3 Deluxe, and the recently released Pikmin 4. That is to say — Eighting is very highly regarded among developers, both as a primary developer and as a secondary studio to help make great games happen.

The Hunter x Hunter fighting game is in development now, and is set to be published by Bushiroad, which is a bit of a strange choice, all things considered. Bushiroad is most well known for its collectible card games, like Cardfight Vanguard and Weiß Schwarz, but it certainly does dabble in video games, though almost exclusively for mobile platforms.

If we had to guess, though, this upcoming game probably won’t be a mobile game. Eighting doesn’t really do games for smartphones, with the exception of a few smaller games here and there — like Zoids: Field of Rebellion, a mobile MOBA from 2016. Realistically, Hunter x Hunter’s fighting game will probably end up on much the same platforms as DNF Duel: PC, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch, assuming Switch is still around at that point.

As for literally any more information, you’ll just have to wait and see. Eighting and Bushiroad are being very tight-lipped about all of this — there’s no release window, no platforms mentioned, and no concept art or key artwork for it. All we know is that it’s real, and at some point in the future, it will be a video game that you can play.

More details are set to be revealed on January 6, 2024.
