How Hunter Schafer Got Her Cherry Blossom Flush for the 'Hunger Games' Premiere

Her makeup artist gave us the exclusive details.

Another day, another jaw-dropping look from Hunter Schafer on the press tour for her latest film, Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The actor has been serving nonstop, jetting from red carpet to red carpet wearing a velvety yellow Prada ensemble, shimmering silver Alexander McQueen gown, and now a literal bouquet of flowers.

For the New York premiere on November 15, Schafer posed for pictures with castmates Rachel Zegler and Tom Blyth in a stunning Marni ensemble styled by Dara Alan. A look from the brand’s Spring/Summer ‘24 collection, Schafer was adorned with multiple shades of pink and white flowers jutting out from her minidress in every direction. 

Schafer, who plays Tigris Snow, exclusively tells Byrdie that “the dress feels as though it could live in The Capital, and honors Tigris’s unique and handmade approach to fashion." She adds that she wanted to feel “ethereal” and “vibrant,” as she stepped onto the red carpet. "There’s something casual about wearing a short dress to a premiere, but still elevated with the avante-garde embellishments—so somewhere in between those two worlds."

Her makeup, done by Carolina Dali, only added to the otherwordly feel of the look. Her skin was even and glowy, and her cheeks and lips were flushed with the same shade of pink as the blossoms on her gown.

Dali gave us all the details on the glam process, from inspiration to the final product. Not only inspired by Panem, Dali actually looked to Schafer’s own artwork, as well as “the painterly pink color of Japanese cherry blossoms” when it came to creating the look.

With the vision for the look in place, she got to work using all Shiseido products. “Properly prepping and hydrating the skin is of the utmost importance,” says Dali, who uses the Essential Energy Hydrating Cream ($50), Eudermine Activating Essence ($90), and Ultimune Power Infusing Serum ($200). She also swears by mixing two pumps of the Revitalessence Skin Glow Foundation ($56) (one of Schafer's favorite products) with one pump of the Essential Energy Hydrating Cream ($50) "to create her natural, glowing-from-within complexion.”

Dali says that "when applying coverage, my approach is always ‘less is more.’ I want to be able to see Hunter’s freckles and beauty marks." Hence, the sheered-out foundation. With the base set, she touched up any imperfections with the Synchro Skin Self-Refreshing Concealer ($31) and added that cherry blossom flush with the Inner Glow Cheek Powder ($29) in Twilight Hour and Medusa Pink.

Her final step for the base was “dusting the Synchro Skin Invisible Silk Pressed Powder ($38) in Translucent” across Schafer's skin. A step that “helps the makeup last hours on end without needing touching up” while also keeping the natural finish she loves.

Dali kept the eyes simple, using the Pop Powder Gel Eye Shadow ($22) in Shin Shin Crystal to add a touch of sparkle. Then, she went in with the brand's eyelash curler ($24)—another one of Schafer's personal favorites—before applying a coat or two of the Controlled Chaos MascaraInk ($25). The finishing touch was the TechnoSatin Gel Lipstick ($28) in Voltage Rose, which perfectly complimented the blossoms of her dress.

The end result exuded the “strength,” “warmth,” and “beauty” Dali wanted to shine through the ensemble while honoring both Hunter and her character Tigris’s artistic talent and creative identity—plus, it couldn't be prettier.
