Hulu is a great place for comedies, mysteries, and dramas. Nine Perfect Strangers, Only Murders in the Building, and Cruel Summer are just a few of the platform's large catalogue. The newest addition to the mix is The Other Black Girl.

The Other Black Girl follows Nella, an editorial assistant and the only Black woman working at her publishing house. When another Black woman, Hazel, is hired, Nella is initially excited. But that thrill turns to dismay and trepidation when she comes to believe Hazel is trying to turn Nella's colleagues against her. And as Nella gets to the bottom of things, she also discovers the darker side of the business.

As audiences watch the show, they'll likely wonder what the inspiration for the show is. Hulu is known for its many adaptations and ripped from the headline productions, like Saint X, Little Fires Everywhere, and Normal People; the platform seems to have a way of finding powerful and unforgettable stories and bringing them to the screen.

So it's no surprise then that The Other Black Girl is also based on source material. In fact, there's even a real-life tie in to it. That said, that doesn't mean there's not room for another season. It's possible if the show is successful, Hulu may go off script and decide to expand on what's already there, depending on how the first season ends. It's not the first time they've done it, as Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2 can attest.

Is The Other Black Girl based on a book?

Yes! The Other Black Girl (the show) is based on a novel of the same name by Zakiya Dalila Harris. According to an interview with The New York Times, Harris says one of the inspirations for her book included Jordan Peele's Oscar-winning film, Get Out. The book was a major publishing deal, getting a seven-figure deal in an auction as The Hollywood Reporter notes. The process to getting a television adaptation came not long after.
