Hugh Grant Reveals the Only Reason He’s Still Making Movies in a Shockingly Grumpy ‘Wonka’ Interview

Someone needs to let Hugh Grant know that he just starred as an Oompa Loompa in a remake of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Not the Grinch in a remake of, well, The Grinch. And even though the little orange workers do have a concerning penchant for cleaning up the questionable deaths of children, they’re not particularly known for being a—holes.

Grant, meanwhile, has been really leaning into that territory. In a recent interview about his role in Wonka — a prequel to the 1971 classic based on the Roald Dahl book — Grant said he loathed filming the movie.

“I couldn’t have hated the whole thing more,” he said.

Grant’s character was partially animated, so he had to wear cameras around his face and other apparatuses so the animators could do their jobs. “It was like a crown of thorns, very uncomfortable,” he said, admitting that he “made a big fuss” about the setup.

“And frankly, what I did with my body was terrible, and it’s all been replaced with an animator.”

When asked if the “crown of thorns” was worth it after seeing the film, he shrugged and said “not really,” per Metro.

Oof. That’s bold coming from a man whose inclusion was criticized by actors with dwarfism who said his casting took away roles from little people.

It sounds like Grant would have been a grump regardless of if there was animation involved. The Love Actually actor “jokingly admitted” the reason why he took on this role and is still in the industry.

“I slightly hate [making films] but I have lots of children and need money,” he said.

Grant may have a net worth of $150 million, but it supposedly takes a lot more than that to raise his five kids. The Notting Hill star shares Tabitha — who was born in Sept. 2011 — with ex Tinglan Hong. A year later, he welcomed a son John with wife Anna Aberstein. Three months later, Grant had another child with Hong, Felix. Then, in 2015 and 2018, Grant and Aberstein welcomed kids whose names have not been revealed.

“He was over 50 when he spawned them all,” Grant’s ex-girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley joked after Baby No. 5 was born, adding, “No, he’s an enchanting dad. Really, really sweet. Having these kids has transformed him from a very miserable person into a fairly miserable person. It’s improved him. He’s gone up the scale.”

Gosh, it seems like Grant has hopped back on the Very Miserable Express. Hopefully some quality time with his kids now that filming is over can turn things back around.
