Huda Kattan Uses Lube as Primer in Her Latest Video

As makeup-obsessed editors and fans of all things beauty, we've learned that some of the best hacks don't always include cosmetic products, which is probably why Huda Kattan uses lube as primer in her latest video. If you’re an avid follower of Kattan, you know she’s always testing new beauty methods and trends like her popular tape contour hack or DIY coffee scrub. This time she decided to try unconventional products as face primers: Vagisil, K-Y Jelly lubricant, and milk of magnesia. Yes, really.
If you don't already use primers in your beauty routine, we definitely suggest you start. It helps create a flawless base for foundation and keeps your makeup from shifting. Kattan has tested cult-favorite primers on her YouTube channel in the past, so she's pretty much a pro. For this video, she applied each of the products onto separate areas of her face at the same time. Soon after she applied a full face of makeup, Kattan noticed the K-Y Jelly quickly began to feel sticky, and her foundation started peeling off. Eek. This is no surprise, according to Randy Schueller, a cosmetic chemist in Chicago. “K-Y Jelly is primarily a glycerin-based lubricant that can absorb moisture from air and make your skin sticky. It's not good for priming,” he tells Allure. It does have some pros, though. If you suffer from excessively dry skin, a lube such as K-Y Jelly may give you the hydration boost you need before applying your makeup. "K-Y Jelly contains hydrating ingredients that actually will form a soothing film over the skin," says Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

When it came to applying milk of magnesia her the forehead and T-zone areas, Kattan found the laxative to be a bit drying. She noted that it might work for those with oily skin. Schueller agrees—kind of. "Milk of magnesia's ability to drive water absorption into the intestines may make it capable of tightening skin and leaving a smooth surface for makeup," says Schueller. "It also has some mild antibacterial properties, [so] MOM might help [protect] against acne. However, since it has a high pH—about 10.5—it might also disrupt the natural acid mantle of skin," he says. OK, so maybe we'll stay away from this one.
Next up? Vagisil. Surprisingly, Kattan said the anti-itch ointment "felt great" on her skin. That may be because it contains a chemical called resorcinol. According to Zeichner, "Resorcinol may offer an anesthetic effect and at the same time can help exfoliate dead cells from the skin's surface." He adds that this same ingredient can also be found in some chemical peels used to improve the appearance of skin. However, Vagisil's sole purpose remains as a vaginal treatment, meaning you may want to keep it away from your face. "Vagisil contains a topical anesthetic and anti-itch ingredients, so I would not recommend using it as a face primer," he said.
While a few of these results were surprising—and certainly fun to watch—it’s probably best to stick to the real stuff when it comes to a good base for your makeup.
