HSPPR seeks foster families for kittens and more during busy Spring season

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Right now it’s kitten season in Colorado and the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) is in need of some extra paws (er, hands). The organization is in need of animal foster families who can help take care of pets who may not fare as well in the shelter environment.

This week, during Wednesday’s Home Sweet Home segment, FOX21 Morning News and HSPPR featured Daisy and Lily, approximately eight-week-old kittens, who were brought to HSPPR after they were found in a dumpster. They are not yet available for adoption but both will be once they each gain about half a pound. HSPPR said the two could do this best and learn important social skills at the same time in a foster home.

“We send all different kinds of animals to foster, kittens being a big one, especially right now during kitten season, but we also see puppies, nursing moms, small mammals and adult animals who may be there because they have medical needs or they may be older and we want to get them out of the shelter and into a home until they are adopted,” said Fiona Norby, Community Sheltering Manager for HSPPR.

Those interested should apply online at HSPPR’s website under the “Get Involved” Tab. Fosters must be at least 18, pass a state-required home inspection and attend a brief orientation. Supplies and support are provided. Currently, HSPPR has a large need for families willing to do bottle feeding for small kittens and puppies. “They’re a little bit more of a time-intensive one because they’re going to need feeding every few hours for a couple of weeks but it’s so rewarding to get to watch them grow up from these little bitty babies to functioning kittens or puppies,” said Norby.

Cody Costra, Public Relations Manager for HSPPR, said Daisy and Lily will likely be ready for adoption in about two to three weeks.
