How To: Karolina Kurkova's 5-Minute Braid at the Tribeca Film Festival

Karolina Kurkova wore a messy braided ponytail on last night’s Tribeca Film Festival red carpet, and we want to wear it everywhere. It’s quick, super easy, and versatile. Wear it to hide tomorrow’s bad hair day, or dress it up for your next red carpet appearance like the Victoria’s Secret model. Here’s how to get the look in four easy steps:
Step 1:
Curl two or three pieces of hair on each side of your part to frame your face. Choose small pieces and curl away from your face with the top of the curl starting at your cheekbones. If you’re frizz-prone, apply a shine serum or hair oil like Living Proof’s No Frizz Nourishing Oil ($38) to smooth your flyaways.

Step 2 :
Find your desired part – it can be perfectly straight and centered like Kurkova’s, or you can go with a deeper side part or messy natural part, depending how polished you want the style to be. Then, pull your parted hair into a loose, low ponytail at the nape of your neck, and slide the hair tie up your hair so that the ponytail sits one or two inches above the nape of your neck, but isn’t too tight.

Step 3:
Pull the curled pieces of hair out of your ponytail using the corner of a comb, trying to only pull the shorter areas that you curled rather than full sections. This will keep the hair looking piecey and uncalculated. If you’re not confident in this step, shake your loose ponytail a bit and the pieces should fall into place naturally. Then, tuck the longer pieces of hair behind your ears, using a touch of hairspray on your fingers for hold. Leave out the shortest pieces to frame your face.
Step 4:
Braid the ponytail loosely and secure with a hair tie. Then, pull the braid apart until it is wide and messy. Flatiron the end of the braid, and wear anywhere and everywhere.
