How Pregnant Stars Like Amanda Seyfried Slay On the Red Carpet

Wardrobing a celebrity for a press tour or awards season is bumpy enough without throwing a pregnancy into the mix.

But stylist Elizabeth Stewart, who works with Viola Davis and Amanda Seyfried, takes it in stride. After all, when working with a mom-to-be, the body changes on a near-daily basis and the stylist has to adjust an outfit as needed.

“It’s hard. You have to have a lot more fittings. A pregnancy press tour, you keep checking as they grow. Stick to the style, and figure out the assets you want to show off. If someone can rock a high heel, it’s a good thing to do. Some people can’t, and they need to get flats,” Stewart tells Yahoo Style.

The key to dressing up your bump, says Stewart, is to know what works on your body type.

“If you’re übersexy all the time, I don’t see why you don’t stick with that. Stick with your style as much as you can. Amanda has great legs and her body hasn’t changed at all. We featured her head and her legs, and the rest of her is covered up,” she says. “We check how things fit before a bigger event.”

And on a practical level, “I would say, you wear a lot of stretchy things so there’s some give.”

Last minute fittings are key, Stewart explains of dressing a pregnant Cate Blanchett.

“We did that right before, just to make sure the fit was perfect. She was eight months pregnant. We fit the dress that morning. I had it made. She came in. We just did it that morning,” she says, and Blanchett was out the door.

When all else fails, Stewart turns to her go-to ensemble that Seyfried wore while promoting her Givenchy fragrance in Manhattan. “Leggings, a blouse that goes over your belly, and a jacket on top. It’s a catch-all flattering outfit,” says Stewart.

As far as heels go, Stewart doesn’t back down.

“You gotta get as high as you can go. It’s just one of those things you can do to step a look up,” she says. “But don’t wear anything that’s uncomfortable. That’s a big don’t. As far as clothes go, muumuus tend to not be that flattering. Tighter dresses tend to be the way to go.”

This awards season, Stewart says that Natalie Portman — who just gave birth to daughter Amalia — was the definition of pregnancy chic.

“She’s not my client. I commend her stylist and her. Great taste. People are very lucky when only their belly grows. Amanda is like that too. Some people swell up all over. It’s the luck of the draw,” she says.
