Netflix has an ample collection of true crime documentaries, series, and movies to make your hair stand on end all year long. Following DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and The Watcher, the streaming giant’s latest offering chronicles the heinous crimes of serial killer Charles Cullen, an ICU nurse who murdered between 30 to 40 hospital and nursing home patients over 16 years. Titled The Good Nurse, the film is framed from the perspective of Amy Loughren, also a nurse and Cullen’s coworker who helped the police catch and arrest the killer.

Cullen and Loughren worked together at Somerset Hospital in Somerville, New Jersey, and “bonded right away,” she told People. But after a string of mysterious deaths, Loughren learned the terrifying truth about her coworker.

Cullen worked, and killed, at nine healthcare facilities before arriving at Somerset in 2002, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. He graduated from Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing in New Jersey in 1986, then went on to work at a handful of different hospitals in the northern and western parts of the state. In 1998, he went to Pennsylvania and over two years, worked at four hospitals and one nursing and rehabilitation center.

Following his arrest in December 2003, Cullen admitted to killing 29 people — 22 in New Jersey and 9 in Pennsylvania. However, he previously told prosecutors that he likely killed around 40 patients, according to The New York Times. But some investigators believe that number could be closer to 400.

So where exactly did Charles Cullen work? According to the Inquirer, his first job out of nursing school was at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. Here, he killed his first victim by administering a fatal dose of lidocaine. Then he went to Hunterdon Medical Center, followed by a position at Morristown Medical Center.

In Pennsylvania, Cullen worked at five facilities, per the Inquirer: Liberty Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Lehigh Valley Hospital, Sacred Heart Hospital, Easton Hospital, and St. Luke’s Hospital. At Somerset, the last hospital he worked at before his arrest, Cullen murdered his largest number of victims — 13 — mostly by injecting lethal doses of medication into their IV bags.

Cullen is now an inmate at the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton, serving 11 consecutive life sentences. His earliest parole date is in June 2388.
