Horizon Goodwill opens food market in senior high rise apartment complex

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — People who live in the Walnut Towers senior high-rise started the week off with convenient, nutritious food options.

Horizon Goodwill has partnered with the Hagerstown Housing Authority to offer health choices for the neighborhood. Grocery stores are limited in the immediate area.

“We started with smaller-scale convenience-type markets and we’ll later open a full-fledged grocery store,” said David Shuster, CEO of Horizon Goodwill.

“We can serve 150 low-income, elderly and disabled households through this store,” said Sean Griffith with the Hagerstown Housing Authority.

“Food insecurity is real, and it unfortunately affects the most vulnerable,” said Hagerstown City Councilmember Matt Schindler.

“Goodwill’s mission is to meet people where they are, so this is a perfect example of our mission in action,” said Brooke Grossman, chief mission officer for Horizon Goodwill.
