Hopper’s Fate Was Just Revealed in a Surprise ‘Stranger Things 4’ Promo

From Cosmopolitan

[Warning: spoilers below for Stranger Things 3 finale]

A surprise promo for Stranger Things 4 magically appeared online on Friday morning, and it revealed the answer to a mystery that fans have been dying to know since Stranger Things 3 debuted last July: Hopper is alive and in Russia. This 100 percent confirms that he’s “the American” the subtitles in the Russian prison referred to in the show’s post-credits scene. The promotion also makes it official with word from the Duffer Brothers: Stranger Things 4 has officially begun production. YAY!

The Twitter promo is captioned “From Russia with love…” and is 50 seconds of footage from a Russian facility, primarily of prisoners working. At the end of the video, the camera zooms in on one of those prisoners, revealing a familiar face: Chief Jim freakin’ Hopper. Except for some reason, he’s bald (???)—and, like, really far away from home.

A press release from Netflix—a letter from series creators the Duffer Brothers—confirms the premise for the fourth season of the sci-fi smash hit and Hopper’s identity as the mysterious “American” from the third season’s post-credits scene.

“We’re excited to officially confirm that production on Stranger Things 4 is now underway—and even more excited to announce the return of Hopper! Although it’s not all good news for our “American,” he is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, where he will face dangers both human...and other. Meanwhile, back in the States, a new horror is beginning to surface, something long buried, something that connects everything….Season 4 is shaping up to be the biggest and most frightening season yet, and we cannot wait for everyone to see more. In the meantime—pray for the American.

From Russia with love,
The Duffer Brothers”

I mean, this was truly a *chef’s kiss* way to get Stranger Things fans stoked online. David Harbour will officially be back on Stranger Things, news welcomed by most fans but not all. After the police chief’s behavior in season 3 (you know, screaming at Mike and Eleven over exhibiting normal teenage behavior or aggressively demeaning Joyce for standing him up at a restaurant), Twitter wasn’t too pleased with Harper. But hey, maybe he’ll redeem himself!

Now, the next thing we need is a release date. Just be patient, people—soon enough we’ll get our next glimpses not only at Hopper but also Eleven, Steve, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, and the whole gang.
