Homemade whipped cream recipe: Make the delicious treat with just three ingredients

If you have never experienced the deliciousness of fresh, homemade whipped cream, you’re missing out. It pairs well with so many things: fruit, coffee and desserts. Alternatively, a spoonful by itself may be naughty but it's nice!

Whipped cream is an incredibly simple and fast treat to make. Plus, the homemade taste far exceeds the stuff you find in a can or tub at the grocery store. The only downside is that the freshly-made topping doesn’t last as long as the store-bought stuff. Any leftover whipped cream should be stored in an airtight container in your fridge.

How to make whipped cream

One trick for making whipped cream is to use a chilled bowl and whisk. Put both in the freezer and give them time to chill before making whipped cream. (Psst, you can also make whipped cream using a mason jar!)

To make whipped cream, you’ll need:

  • Whipping cream or heavy cream.

  • Vanilla extract.

  • Powdered sugar.

The only difference between the creams is that heavy cream has more fat than whipping cream.

To make homemade whipped cream:

  1. Start the mixer on low.

  2. Pour in cold whipping cream.

  3. Let it mix for about a minute.

  4. Add in a dash of vanilla extract as it mixes.

  5. Add in powdered sugar as it mixes.

  6. Stop when medium peaks form.

  7. Enjoy!

Similar to Goldilocks and the Three Bears, there are three stages of whipping cream: too soft, too firm and just right. Whipped cream is made fast and you don’t want to overmix it.

The first stage is soft peaks. This means the whipped cream won’t hold its shape and will slump over. If you’re at this stage, continue mixing for an additional 10-20 seconds to reach medium peaks.

Medium peaks are what you want! They're fluffy but firm.

If you overmix the medium peaks, you’ll end up with a thicker mix that is about to become butter.
