A police officer in Illinois left a homeless man speechless when he gave him his own shoes after noticing the man was having difficulty walking in his.
Officer Brian Zagorski, of Niles, saw the homeless man tripping as he was walking, due to one of his shoes missing a sole, at around 5pm on Saturday. After a brief conversation, in which Zagorski found out that he and the man had the same size feet, the officer removed his shoes and gave them to the man. The kind act was shared on the department's social media accounts.
The homeless man said that he could not believe the officer gave him his shoes.
The officer also offered the man a bag of H.O.P.E., which is a backpack filled with clothing and toiletries put together by officers, but the man politely declined.
"I was happy. I made a difference, and that's essentially what we sign up to do, is to make a difference," Zagosrki told WGNTV.
Many in the community were quick to commend the act of kindness on social media.
"I don't personally know who the officer is, but I love that guy. He took an interest, and didn't just usher the guy along, he listened and solved one of his problems," one person commented. "He did a lot more for him than most, so congrats to him."
"That's exactly what kind of officers we need," another wrote. "God bless him and keep him safe."
While the officer has not talked to the man since Saturday, he said he plans to keep an out for him should he need any more help, as well as others who may need assistance.
