The American network behind CIA drama Homeland, has announced that its acclaimed series will end in 2019 with its eighth season.

The conclusion of the show, which stars Clare Danes, was announced on Monday by Showtime Networks chief David Nevins, who told a TV critics' meeting that creator-producer Alex Gansa will bring the "game-changing" national security drama to what he called its "proper conclusion."

In a statement, Gansa said he was sad to see the series finish but said that it was time for the show to reach its end.

The series first broadcast on Channel 4 in 2012 starring Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody, a marine held captive by terrorists in Afghanistan who was later rescued after eight years, and Danes as Carrie Mathison, a CIA agent who believed Brody may have been indoctrinated.

It became popular for its depiction of dangerous conflicts that sometimes mirrored real-world events. In series seven Carrie struggled to uncover an international conspiracy trying to harm America's democratic institutions.

The final series of "Homeland" will debut in the US in June 2019, but a UK release date is yet to be announced.

Nevis told reporters: “This project...brought to life by a remarkable cast led by Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin, is a richly written character study that is now ready for its natural conclusion. Viewers will be rewarded by the way Alex brings Homeland home.”
