The home on Calle Del Oro, which has aptly been named Vista d’Oro, is perched above La Jolla Shores, a one-mile stretch of luxury homes along the rugged coastline of the ritzy waterfront community that’s within the city of San Diego. Vista d’Oro is currently one of the most expensive listings in all of San Diego.

The sellers have owned the property since 2009 but demolished the existing structure and rebuilt the home in 2020. To do this, they tapped architectural firm Studio William Heffner, interior design firm Maison Trouvaille, and San Diego-based Wardell Builders to create their dream home.
The owners spent more than 5,000 hours meticulously designing every element of the property, from the flow of each space to the amenities to the finishes and custom woodwork.
The 7,800-square-foot home has six bedrooms, six bathrooms, and two half-bathrooms and was designed for indoor-outdoor living. While not directly on the beach, the hillside home offers 180-degree, unobstructed views of the ocean and mountains from inside and out. It fuses design elements from Mexico, Italy, and France, resulting in an idyllic coastal Southern California estate.
“Vista D’Oro boasts everything coastal and modern, perfect for family-friendly entertaining in La Jolla, with arguably the best postcard views of the coast,” says listing agent Craig Lotzof of Compass.
The residence impresses from the moment you walk in. It was designed with a free-flowing open floor plan, high ceilings, and disappearing doors for seamless access to the decks. The main living space features double-height ceilings with a lofted hallway connecting the two wings of the home, as well as a full wet bar to enjoy a sunset cocktail. Sliding glass doors open to reveal a 3,500-square-foot outdoor deck, complete with an infinity-edge pool, hot tub, lounge spaces, fireplace, outdoor dining area, a turf playing field, and a standalone fitness and yoga studio. The turf area has tiered seating overlooking the soccer pitch, designed for the family’s children. The entire property boasts immaculate landscaping throughout, and the outdoor areas even have hanging plants for a jungle-like atmosphere.
The first level is where you’ll find the gourmet kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances, a wine fridge, eat-in kitchen island, breakfast nook, a back kitchen for private chef events, and a mudroom for overflow storage. Maison Trouvaille worked with the family to create warm spaces with organic materials and shapes that contrast with the home’s clean lines and walls of glass. For example, the kitchen has intricate woodwork along a wall, open shelving, and many plants. The first floor also has an office, which can easily be transformed into a seventh bedroom.
The upper floor is accessible via two separate staircases. One staircase leads to the five-star resort-worthy primary bedroom and spa-like bathroom. The bedroom has a fireplace and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that open to a private oceanfront terrace. The sun-drenched room connects to a huge closet and, larger than most people’s bedrooms, a bathroom that’s replete with a freestanding Japanese-style soaking tub that doubles as a cryotherapy-inspired ice bath.
The additional en suite bedrooms are located throughout the second floor and are ideal for those with a large family. In fact, there is a spacious kid’s playroom with daybeds, desks for studying, gaming capabilities, and another terrace. There’s also a kid’s rock climbing wall.
The residence is ideal for those seeking a contemporary home intimately connected to nature. The entire property boasts immaculate landscaping throughout, and the outdoor areas even have hanging plants for a jungle-like atmosphere.
