I have long held that life is too short to be low maintenance, or even pretend to be so. There is a good deal of fun in self-care and the rituals you can implement... up to a point. I love a spa moment, but there are some things that are just tedious, hair removal among them.

About a decade ago at this point, I got laser hair removal on my armpits and other select areas of my body like my swimsuit line (I really regret is not having done my legs,) which has largely held up. Worth it! But every once in a while, I get a little growth in my pits, which often takes me weeks to notice because I am accustomed to not having to worry about maintaining that area.

Given that winter is maintenance season, and extra downtime can be an investment in looking our very best come the thaw, I decided to start experimenting with a little at-home IPL when I received one of SmoothSkin's Pure Fit IPL Hair Devices in early November. Why not try it out and see if I have to shave my legs a whole lot less frequently come summer?

First, some details about this powerful little at-home miracle. For starters it has 10 power settings, as well as three removal modes and a target precision head. How it works is simple: Plug it in and once the area you're zapping has been shaved and is dry, you place the head flush to your skin, where a sensor adjusts to custom levels to safely suit your skintone. The three modes help effectively choose whether you want a zippy treatment or need to go a bit lightly because of skin sensitivity. The only thing that's not ideal about this device is sometimes it can be difficult around specific areas, like the ankles or the knees, to get flush sensor placement, but everything else is a breeze. It's not even really all that painful. Unless I'm feeling ultra-sensitive it's like a rubber band snapping against your skin.

Reader: I have not been disappointed. I found myself really amazed at how effective this was almost instantly. Within a few weeks, I noticed the dark hair on my skin was growing in far more slowly, and more sparsely, all in about the span of a month. And from there this has continued. This won't be permanent of course, and will require maintenance after the initial 12 week cycle, with 4-8 week maintenance sessions. All manageable, because the whole routine takes me less than 10 minutes. Worth it, if you consider how much time I'd be spending shaving my legs.

All in all, I highly recommend. It's worth the investment of time upfront to make your life easier in the long run.
