Holy Cow, Pete Davidson's Wearing a Suit Now
Alive From New York, the first Netflix stand-up special from Saturday Night Live's Pete Davidson is hitting screens later this month. Having a new comedy special on the streaming giant is a big deal for anyone, but maybe especially so for the 26-year-old comedian, his first since his paparazzi-fueled rise to a household name. Davidson, of course, is known for his love of loud streetwear and outlandish clothing. So color us pleasantly surprised that, in the special's trailer, the comedian's rocking a more grown-up look: a genuinely excellent suit.
Now, this isn't exactly a fusty grandpa vibe. The suit checks all the right boxes for today's times. The blazer? A perfect amount of slouch. The pants? Roomy and expertly cropped. To complete the look, Davidson wears a cream-colored sweater (half-tucked in, no less!) and a pair of crisp white sneakers. Forgoing the button-up shirt and tie was the right move; going full suit-and-tie feels a bit too square for Davidson. Even though he didn't commit to the traditional suit, the look still a drastic departure for the comedian whose closet rivals that of a teenage hypebeast. It's a big change, and one wonders where Davidson got the idea to polish up his outfit. Let's ponder, shall we?
John Mulaney is one of Davidson's good friends (and fellow funnyman), and himself a pretty sharp dresser—most notably, he almost always wears a suit when he performs. Last year, Mulaney and Davidson swapped outfits while on a comedy tour together, the former donning a Wu Wear denim jacket and SpongeBob SquarePants pants, the latter in a slim charcoal suit and skinny tie. It was a good gag, sure, but perhaps the suit seed was planted! Davidson also appeared on Netflix's YouTube series "Dressing Funny," hosted by Queer Eye's fashion expert Tan France, which found France spending most of the episode trying to get the comedian to step outside of his loudly colored streetwear box. One outfit is a light-grey suit with a turtleneck, a foreshadowing of sorts for what Davidson wore for his special.
Regardless of whoever pushed Davidson on the path to don a blazer and dress pants in his new special, the move appears to be paying off. (He can save his swishy pants and bucket hats for another night.) Even the king of loud streetwear needs to dress up sometime—and this is undoubtedly the right way to do it.
