This Holographic, Floral-Patterned Buzz Cut Is the Prettiest Short Hairstyle for Spring
Flower power — with a splash of sparkles. That’s the look barber Meghan Monique and colorist Danielle Jurnett was going for. If you're into bold hair, get ready for what they call "Holographic Dream": a glittery, purple-hued buzz cut resembling a mandala flower, which is perfect for the spring season.
First, let's get down to the color. This was done before the buzz cut to assure there was no dye bleeding into the line work. "When I'm choosing fantasy colors, I am inspired by each individual personality that is sitting in my chair,” says Jurnett, who started working with her client, Kara Lobato, in October 2016.
When they first met, Lobato's natural dark brunette hair had never been colored before and was about a couple of inches above her waist. “We started with little peek-a-boos of color at first and about every four to six weeks, she kept coming in to add more," Jurnett tells Allure. Throughout the past almost year and a half, Lobato's hair has been several variations of blue, green, violet, and gray.
This time around, Jurnett aimed for something soft and romantic to complement the sharp, precise design that was planned. The hair was lightened with Guy Tang Big 9 Crème Lightener to a level 9 (very light blonde), then followed up with a mixture of Pulp Riot Lilac and Velvet purple dyes. In total, the process took about two hours.
After, Lobato drove over an hour from her color appointment in Colorado Springs to Denver for her haircut with Monique. “She's one of our dearest clients and won't let anyone touch her hair but the two of us," says Jurnett, who introduced Lobato to Monique, a former classmate at the Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School.
Monique started the cut by using a number two clipper guard (a pair of comb-like blades that range from numbers one through eight — the smaller the number, the shorter the hair will turn out). "I took the hair down all to one length, then etched a rough draft of the design in with trimmers," says Monique. "As I saw how everything worked together, I started to play with the depths and dimensions of the lines." To achieve a clean look, she finished all of the line work with straight razor.
So, why the mandala flower design? “It's so intricate, not many can replicate them and I love a challenge,” says Monique. Although out-of-the-box cuts like this technically work for anyone, she notes it showcases best on those with medium to coarse hair textures.
The process didn't stop there. Lobato then drove back to Colorado Springs to see Jurnett for the final stage: applying IGK's Foamo Holographic Hair Foam in Meteor. The colored mousse creates a cosmic iridescent reflection that moves in the light, thanks to its key ingredient of moonstone extract.
“We saw what people were doing with holographic makeup products — lip glosses, eyeshadows — and wanted to create something like that for hair,” says Aaron Grenia, co-founder of IGK Hair Care. "Foamo is great because every piece of it is an experience. When you dispense it into your hands it foams up into a shimmering, colorful ball." The holographic payoff transfers to your hair as soon as you apply it.
What we admire the most is the significance behind a new cut and color. “I see the buzz cut trend on women rising, as our views on what’s ‘feminine’ are broadening,” says Monique. “I think it’s empowering for women to have short hair and feel beautiful.”
Jurnette adds, “I would’ve never in my wildest dreams thought that it would be acceptable for so many professional women to have fantasy and creative hair color. I love that you can make such a bold statement without saying a word.” Looks like all the driving was worth it for hair so cool.
