How Hollywood Spotlit #TimesUp at This Year’s Golden Globes

Last year’s Golden Globes ceremony put a relentless focus on #TimesUp, the movement spotlighting sexual harassment and gender inequality in Hollywood and cut through the frivolity of the night and, instead, aimed to raise awareness about an ongoing issue within the industry, and around the globe. (Attendees wore black on the red carpet, and some of them, such as Michelle Williams, Meryl Streep, and Jessica Chastain, brought leading gender and racial justice advocates as their dates.)

At tonight’s ceremony, the carpet was mostly back to business as usual, though some of Hollywood’s leading stars still chose to spotlight the movement, this time in a much subtler way. On the carpet, actors and actresses all wore black and white bracelets and ribbons. They were designed by costume designer Arianne Phillips, and meant to be part of the Time’s Up x2 campaign, marking the second year of the movement, as well as a call to double the number of women in leadership positions across industries. Stars such as this year’s host Andy Samberg, Julianne Moore, Amy Adams, Debra Messing, Rachel Brosnahan, and Yvonne Strahovski all partook.

So far, the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund has connected almost 4,000 women and men who have faced sexual assault or harassment at work with various legal aids. And judging by recent events, such as the Harvey Weinstein trial or the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, or the trending docuseries Surviving R. Kelly claiming that the singer abused young girls and women for years, there’s still work to be done.
