Hoda Kotb Is Engaged to Her Longtime Boyfriend, Joel Schiffman
Hoda Kotb went on vacation, and came back with a particularly sparkly souvenir, much to her—and her co-hosts'—surprise.
The Today anchor shocked her costars on-air when she broke the news. "A friend of ours asked me to let you guys in on a little secret," Kotb said. "Well, I’ll give you her initials. Her initials are Hoda Kotb and she’s engaged."
She showed off her new ring, and after her co-hosts had calmed down a bit, Kotb explained that she'd been hiding the rock in her bra all morning, and slipped it on just before she made the announcement. "My heart has literally been pounding," she said of the anticipation.
Kotb then went on to explain how Joel Schiffman—her boyfriend of six years, and father to their two adopted daughters—popped the question. During what she described as their "usual vacation" in an unnamed tropical locale, the couple "ended up having a little dinner on the beach."
She added, "We were done with dinner, I was eating the churros, like licking the bottom of the bowl, and he was like 'I have something else I’d like to say.' And then he said some beautiful things, and then he got down on one knee. And he said, 'Will you be my wife?'"
Kotb said she was "totally shocked" by the proposal. The couple's daughters, two-year-old Haley Joy and months-old Hope Catherine, likely will be too—once Kotb and Schiffman decide how to tell them. "How are we gonna explain, 'your parents are going to get married?'" Kotb joked. "We’re still trying to figure out that part of it."
