*Spoilers for Hocus Pocus 2 below!*

We all woke up on September 30 and excitedly proclaimed, “Another glorious morning — makes me sick!,” right? That day marked the official expansion of the Hocus Pocus cinematic universe, as Hocus Pocus 2 finally debuted on Disney+. The sequel to the 1993 cult classic resurrected the Sanderson Sisters once more, but this time, they found themselves in the year 2022.

Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker reprised their roles as witches Winifred, Mary, and Sarah Sanderson, and Doug Jones returned as the zombified Billy Butcherson. The sequel also introduced new characters Becca (Whitney Peak), Izzy (Belissa Escobedo), and Cassie (Lilia Buckingham), Salem high school students who accidently bring the sisters back to life after lighting the Black Flame Candle on All Hallow’s Eve.

Among bewitching musical numbers and a brief flashback to the Sanderson Sisters’ first brush with magic, Hocus Pocus 2 chronicles the witches’ hilarious attempts to wreak havoc on Salem and steal the souls of children to stay young.

At the end of the film, Winifred attempts to achieve ultimate power with the Magicae Maxima spell, but she quickly learns that becoming all-powerful means she’d have to sacrifice her sisters, who she values most. So Winnie begs Becca, a newly discovered witch, to complete the reunification spell and bring her back to her sisters. But Mary and Sarah don’t return to Earth — Winnie joins them in their otherworldly realm.

The final scene wraps the Sanderson Sisters’ story, but a post-credits scene seems to suggest that a third film is in the works. There’s been no confirmation from the cast or Disney+ that Hocus Pocus 3 will happen, but we can’t ignore the clues. Below, we break down everything we know so far about a potential Hocus Pocus 3.

So, will there be a Hocus Pocus 3?

As mentioned, a post-credits scene reveals that there’s a second Black Flame Candle. And before the credits roll, Cassie and Izzy ask Becca if the Sanderson Sisters are really gone for good. Becca begins to say, “Yeah I guess so,” but is interrupted by Gilbert (Sam Richardson), who returns — a little too late — to help defeat the sisters.

These two scenes hint that the Sandersons could return to Salem once more, since there’s no clear confirmation that they’re forever gone.

Plus, a bird is seen following Becca, Izzy, and Cassie at the end of the movie, as they return home from the woods. This is the same bird that’s seen in the flashback scene to Salem in 1653, when we meet young Winifred, Mary, and Sarah Sanderson.

So, Hocus Pocus 3 could follow Becca and her coven’s adventures in modern-day Salem. Or, we could revisit the story of the Witch Mother (Hannah Waddingham), who the Sanderson Sisters met in the woods over three centuries ago.

What has the cast said about Hocus Pocus 3?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker seemed skeptical of a threequel, but remained open to the idea of future installments.

“I feel like we're done. We've pulled every story you could pull out of this. I guess, never say never, but I feel grateful that we got to do it again,” Najimy said. “I don't know that there are plans for a third one, but I know fans are dedicated to this film.”

“If there was a third one, of course I'd sign on, but I don't know how. I can't imagine what the story would be, but I love Winifred, Sarah, Mary, and our relationship,” Midler added.

Is there a release date for Hocus Pocus 3?

Again, there’s no confirmation yet that Hocus Pocus 3 is happening. We had to wait nearly three decades (!) for Hocus Pocus 2, so hopefully, a potential third film would be released much sooner. For now, we’ll just have to continue to manifest Hocus Pocus 3.
