Historical Society program to focus on furniture

Apr. 15—HIGH POINT — "Industry in the Wood: Western North Carolina Furniture Manufacturing" will be the program topic of this month's meeting of the High Point Historical Society.

The meeting will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the High Point Museum, 1859 E. Lexington Ave.

The featured speaker will be North Carolina historian Richard Eller, author of "Well-Crafted: The History of Furniture Manufacturing in Western North Carolina." Eller is also executive director of Redhawk Publications, a press associated with Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory.

Eller will share stories of the furniture makers of western North Carolina, who have been building a product that has met with customers' approval for almost three centuries. He will discuss that history, from the era when furniture pieces were crafted by hand to today's modern, mass-produced pieces.

This program ties into the High Point Museum's current exhibition, "Makers to Manufacturers: Furniture-Making in the Piedmont, 1830-1890," which recently opened and will run through the end of 2024. Viewers will have a chance to view the exhibition after Eller's presentation.

The program is free and open to the public.
