Hillary Clinton’s Terse Letter to 'SNL' Ensured They’d Never Discuss This Part of the Family Again

Saturday Night Live, or SNL, is known for pushing the boundaries with their comedic skits. Sometimes, it turns out great and an instant classic SNL skit that captures the long-running show’s magic. Other times, it’s dubbed incredibly insensitive, and when that happens, some of the people at the butt of the joke take action.

While we’ve seen former US President Donald Trump get quite angry about his portrayals on the hit show, the show has kept them going. However, that’s not entirely the case with Hillary Clinton’s family. While the cast has portrayed her multiple times over the past few decades, there’s allegedly one member of the family that’s off-limits: Hillary and Bill Clinton’s daughter Chelsea Clinton.

On a recent episode of the Fly on the Wall podcast, SNL alum Julia Sweeney and co-hosts Dana Carney and David Spade discussed the controversial 1993 skit where Sweeney played Chelsea. Spade revealed that the skit “rubbed somebody wrong,” to which Sweeney quickly remarked, “Yeah, Hillary.”

Apparently, after the skit went live, Hillary sent the producers a terse letter that expressed her disapproval of them portraying Chelsea. While the contents of the letter were never shared, nor is the original skit available on the SNL YouTube page, SNL never portrayed Chelsea again.

Now, do fans know what was in the letter? No, to this day, only the producers and castmates at the time know, but it was heated enough that SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels sent an apology soon after, and publicly commented, saying: “We felt, upon reflection, that if it was in any way hurtful, it wasn’t worth it. She’s a kid, a kid who didn’t choose to be in public life.”
