Hill Harper is officially out The Good Doctor amid his run for political office.

The news, however disappointing to fans, doesn't come as a total surprise. Harper, who played Dr. Marcus Andrews since the start of the show, announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate in Michigan on July 10, promising to run to the left of Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a moderate Democrat, for the seat currently held by outgoing senator Debbie Stabenowrong>.

"We can all feel it: D.C just isn’t getting things done for people," he wrote at the time. "We need representatives who'll take on special interests, get money out of politics, and make our government work for all of us. That’s why today, I’m announcing my campaign for U.S. Senate in Michigan!"

In confirming the news of Harper's exit to TVLine, the actor's campaign spokesperson told the outlet, “Hill Harper feels strongly that there is a crisis in American democracy—too often, government only works for the rich and powerful while the rest of us struggle to find a voice. Hill is dedicating his efforts full time to fixing that, and he’s running for the U.S. Senate as an active union member to give working people more of a voice in Congress.”

It's unclear how Harper's absence will be addressed in Season 7 of the show, but the Season 6 finale, which saw his character resign as hospital president, set him up for an organic exit. Alas, his departure from The Good Doctor leaves just Freddie Highmore (Dr. Shaun Murphy) and Richard Schiff (Dr. Aaron Glassman) as the show's two remaining OGs.
