Hilary Duff Reveals Whether She'll Return to Music—and What Her Career 'Sweet Spot' Is

Hey now, hey now! Hilary Duff "can never say never" to making another album.

While the actress admittedly does not have the time these days, she did show off her voice in the Season 2 premiere of How I Met Your Father performing “When a Man Loves a Woman."

Asked if she singing on the Hulu sitcom made her want to get back into the studio, Duff told Parade.com in an exclusive interview, "No, I don't think that experience was like, 'Oh, can't wait to make an album.' But, you know, it's always a part of my world. And there's like lots of question marks, like, 'Well, how could I fit that into my life now and what would my album be like?'"

She added, "I can never say never."

Duff released her last studio album Breathe In. Breathe Out. back in 2015. If and when the time comes for a new one, the Lizzie McGuire alum can count on her singer-songwriter husband, Matthew Koma, to be there for her.

"I'm very lucky that I live with an amazing producer and songwriter as my husband, so any time I want to, he's there for me," the "So Yesterday" singer said. "But I'm busy; I don't know how that would work. I'm not a very balanced person."

"I can give a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I really give myself like when I'm here at this job, I'm really here at this job," Duff explained. "And, of course, I have motherhood at home, but I just don't have the time. But I would love to one day."

Do you ever pitch storylines that are inspired by your own experiences to the How I Met Your Father writers?

Oh my gosh. Do I? I don't. I mean, our writers are so good. They are cranking out scripts before we can even process that we're done with the one before that. They're so on top of the storylines that I haven't pitched any personal stories. Also, my life is so different than Sophie's life. Like, I go home to three kids and like wake up and pack lunches and run to work, and Sophie's probably nursing a hangover until like 11 a.m. Obviously our personalities have similar traits, but our lives are so different.

Have you ever found yourself in a similar situation to Sophie that hit close to home?

Oh my God, I'm trying to replay the season in my head of all Sophie did this year. I mean, when I was single, I guess dating was treacherous, and that's the most that I would relate to her—just her quest to find her person and to find love, and something that is real and good that she can exist in. I definitely related to that a little bit before I got remarried.

I feel like a lot of the characters you've played on TV, especially Sophie, are relatable. Is that something that you look for or that's important to you when accepting roles?

Yes! I think that I've kind of realized that that's my sweet spot and that I really thrive and do my best when I can see myself in a character and have that to draw from. I apply that little magic trick of mine in making someone see themselves in my role or my person, do you know what I'm saying?

Totally. Now, this season there are a ton of guest stars—Meghan Trainor, Mark Consuelos, Neil Patrick Harris. Was there someone in particular who you were excited to work with?

Well, Meghan's a friend of mine, so I was very excited to have her on set and just to make that phone call asking her to be on the show. She was really excited and had never had an acting job before, so it was very cute to see her and to deliver her baby! I got to deliver Meghan's baby.

Mark was great to work with because I've been on Kelly's show so many times and I had never met him, so his being here was really fun. And who else did we have on the show? John Corbett who I've worked with before when I was a teenager. And so this was like in a very different capacity working with him, but he's great. I think we just feel honored that so many people are wanting to come on our show and come play with us over here.

You know, last season was like, "Are we gonna make it? Are we good enough? Is anyone gonna care?" And then this season, we're picked up for 20 episodes and getting to dig our toes in a little bit more and have all these cool people. Neil Patrick Harris—it's been a real dream of a season to just get closer with the cast, get closer with our characters and have lots of great visitors.
